Annapurna Base Camp

Annapurna Base Camp is a 4,130 m glacial basin at the head of the Modi Khola valley, enclosed on nearly every side by an amphitheater of Himalayan giants: Annapurna I (8,091 m) to the north, Annapurna South (7,219 m) and Hiunchuli (6,441 m) to the west, and the sacred, officially unclimbed Machhapuchhre — "Fishtail" — (6,993 m) standing sentinel over the approach. Annapurna I holds a singular place in mountaineering history: on 3 June 1950, French climbers Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal became the first people ever to stand atop an 8,000 m peak, without supplemental oxygen, on their first attempt — a feat no other 8,000 m first ascent has matched. The triumph came at severe cost; both men lost most of their fingers and toes to frostbite during the retreat, amputated in the field without anaesthetic. Annapurna I has remained one of the most dangerous 8,000ers ever since — its historical fatality-to-summit ratio through the 2000s ran as high as 32-39%, among the worst of any peak on Earth, though modern equipment, forecasting, and rescue capability have brought the cumulative ratio down to roughly 13% as of 2026. None of that risk touches the trek documented here: reaching Base Camp on foot is a standard, non-technical teahouse trek, walked by tens of thousands of ordinary trekkers every year with no climbing equipment or mountaineering skill required. The route runs entirely inside the Annapurna Conservation Area (ACAP), Nepal's largest protected area, established as a pilot project in 1986 and expanded region-wide in 1992, funded almost entirely by trekker permit fees rather than government budget. The trail climbs through Gurung and Magar villages, dense rhododendron and bamboo forest, and a narrowing glacial gorge before opening into the Sanctuary itself — named, per Hindu tradition, for Annapurna Devi, the goddess of nourishment and a manifestation of Parvati, whose principal shrine sits in Asan, Kathmandu.
