Overview
Before 1964, when Edmund Hillary's own Himalayan Trust built the airstrip at Lukla, every single person who came to Everest — Hillary and Tenzing in 1953, every expedition before them, every porter carrying every load — walked in from Jiri, a week of constant up-and-down through mid-hill Sherpa and Rai villages that almost no modern fly-in itinerary ever sees. This strategy retraces that original approach, then continues onto the standard Everest corridor from Lukla, following the same Classic route through Namche, Tengboche, Dingboche, Gorak Shep, and Kala Patthar. It is, by a significant margin, the most physically demanding itinerary on this list in terms of cumulative distance and repeated elevation gain, but also the most gradual in terms of altitude adaptation — by the time trekkers on this route reach Namche, their bodies will have spent a full week longer acclimatising to life above 1,500 m than anyone who flew in the same morning. The Jiri approach is the right choice for trekkers who want the deepest possible experience of the Everest region, who have the time for it, and who understand that the trade-off is not altitude risk but trail fatigue: the Khumbu is the reward after a genuinely hard week of walking to get there, not the starting line.
Highlights
- Walking the actual historic route Hillary and Tenzing's 1953 expedition used, since the Lukla airstrip that made flying in possible didn't yet exist
- Total removal of the single biggest schedule risk on every other strategy in this document — the Lukla flight — from at least the inbound leg
- Genuinely untouched mid-hill Sherpa and Rai villages that almost no other itinerary in this document's source material passes through
- The most gradual, best-acclimatised altitude profile of any route to Everest Base Camp
